To prevent snow blindness, the Inuits created snow goggles. These goggles were made out of caribou antlers and were meant to protect the native Arctic people from excessive UV exposure. The bone or ivory was pierced with slits and could also be made out of wood. They called them sunglasses. The goggles fit snugly on the face so that light only passed through the slits. Sometimes the Inuit would rub soot on the inside of the snow goggles to further cut down on the glare.
The slits were specifically made very narrow for two reasons. First of all, it cut down on the amount of light passing through. Secondly, the narrowness improved the visual acuity. The greater the width of the slits gave a larger field of view, of course. DC Comics created the supervillan, Captain Cold, with goggles inspired and modeled after the Inuit snow goggles. He wears the goggles to protect his eyes from the glare of the ice that he creates using his Cold Gun.
